Work for Thursday 5/14 and Friday 5/15

This is a two day writing assignment. Thursday you will do the writing. Friday you will edit/revise it.

Thursday:
Imagine there is a bag full of groceries. Clearly imagine what is in a “normal” grocery bag.
Now...imagine a scene inside the grocery bag, where all of the different items have their own
personalities, opinions, and ideas.  Choose one of the items in the bag and imagine how they
would tell a story about the scene in the bag in their own, unique voice.
Write the story from the perspective, and in the voice of, the item you chose.
MILD:  Write a story that has a clear beginning, middle and end.  So, at least three paragraphs.
Make sure to include details about a main character and the setting that really let the reader feel like they are part of the story. Consider using dialogue as part of your story. You had a dialogue lesson last week!

MEDIUM: Write a story that not only has a clear beginning, middle, and end, but also clearly shows some sort of change that happens to at least one character. (Some ideas:  Do they learn a lesson? Do they experience a loss that affects them in some way?  Do they learn something about themselves?)  Make sure to include some dialogue, many details about setting, many details about characters, and many details around the climax of the story.

SPICY: Write a story that has a clear beginning, middle, and end, clearly shows at least one character changing in some way by the end of the story. In addition to the use of dialogue to reveal details about character traits or move the plot forward, and includes at least two of the following Narrative Writing Techniques:
  • Similes and/or metaphors to increase sensory details
  • Use of flashback
  • Changing the first person narrator of the story (if story is written in first person)
  • Using a “side story” or anecdote, that adds to the events of the story
